Watchmen (2009) is a film adaptation of the Watchmen comic that has been publicly acclaimed as the best superhero comic of all times. I haven’t read it, but based on the film I don’t think it lives up to the hype, and perhaps that’s saying that the film is an inadequate adaptation. Nonetheless, compounding elements of other familiar comics, superheroes, contemporary concerns, and philosophy definitely does ennoble it above the average superhero story. It’s 1 hour and 43 minutes, which is long, but definitely worth watching in theaters even if only for Rorschach, played by Jackie Earle Haley, the Comedian played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan (I keep confusing him with Javier Bardem), and for the brilliant cinematography by Larry Fong (read his 2008 interview).

According to my scale:

NC–17 and an 82 out of 100.
